A tempting rasgulla no needs for introduction. Most of the people know about this sweet, a lot of people don’t know the real story behind its origin. Following are the facts about the origin of this tempting sweet.
- Contrary to popular belief the rasgulla was not invented in Bengal. It is actually originated in Orissa. Where it is also known by its original name (Khira Mohana) and it has been a traditional sweet in Orissa for a long time.
- People throughout the state consider the rasgulla prepared by the Kar brothers, the descendants of a local confectioner, Bikalananda Kar, in the town of Salepur, near Cuttack to be the best. Today this rasgulla famously named Bikali Kar Rasgulla is sold all over Orrisa.
- Rasgulla has been in vogue in Orrisa since centuries but it gained popularity in Bengal. A sweet seller named Haradhan Moria may have introduced the sweet to Bengal in the year 1868, Nobin Chandra Das, a local confectioner from Kolkata modified and popularized it.
- Mr.Das wanted to change this, so he took the rasgulla, made some changes in the original recipe and created the rasgulla that we are familiar with and love today! Increasing the shelf life of the rasgulla made it a lot spongier and porous in texture.
- Son of Mr. Nobin Chandra Das, Mr. K.C. Das then started canning this product which increased its popularity several folds. This is the journey of the rasgulla from the by lanes of Orissa to the canned tins in our fridges.
